Peak Oil Task Force Disbanded
At its 6 May 08 meeting, the Brattleboro Selectboard was presented the following resolution by its Regional Peak Oil Task Force, that was based upon the report that the Task Force had submitted 19 February. The Selectboard refused to consider the Resolution, and proceeded to disband the Task Force:
PEAK OIL RESOLUTION THE TOWN OF BRATTLEBORO SELECTBOARD Whereas: 1. The Town of Brattleboro Selectboard established a Peak Oil Task Force (Task Force) at their meeting of April 13, 2007 and, 2. Eleven persons from Windham County applied for and were appointed to the Task Force and, 3. The Task Force’s first stage was to educate itself on the Peak Oil issue and report its conclusions to the Selectboard and 4. The Task Force initial report dated February 19, 2008 found Peak Oil had a factual basis and may have already occurred and, 5. The Task Force presented the report to the Selectboard on February 19 with recommendations for future action by both the Task Force and the Selectboard. Then be it resolved that: 1. We, the Brattleboro Selectboard, recognize that fossil fuels are a critical issue that Brattleboro and the Windham County region need to address and prepare for.
2. We believe that it is important to develop mitigation strategies in all areas of the community's economic, civic, and social life, and support the efforts of our Task Force in addressing this need.
3. Increased energy efficiency, energy conservation, and the use of renewable energy are all important mitigation strategies that will provide a local and regional insurance policy, protecting us from the high cost of and availability of fossil fuels.
4. We encourage and support the efforts of our fellow citizens to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels.
