LOCAL FOOD

Most of the food on the shelves at your local supermarket has traveled an average of 1400 miles.  Between fuel used for transporting our food and common conventional agricultural practices, there are an average of 10 to 15 calories of fossil fuels in nearly every calorie of food that you eat.  Not only that, but there is also only about a 3-5 day supply of food on those grocery store shelves.   If there were to be a sudden disruption in fuel supplies or other crisis that would prevent truck deliveries to our markets how would we feed ourselves and our families?

For these reasons, POS is engaged in a number of projects to support and advance local agriculture as part of our effort to foster food sustainability in our bio-region.  Relying more on food from our region, food we grow ourselves, and putting food by helps us to be more self-reliant for our food needs.
