2006 Upper Dummerston Road Garden

In 2006, the POS Community Garden on Upper Dummerston Road occupied a half-acre of land that was leased from Retreat Healthcare.  The ground was turned over by horse teams on May 20th led by Fair Winds Farm.  There were 24 garden plots each 10’ x 20’, around a central common space, worked by enthusiastic gardeners responsible for planting and maintaining their own plots.  POS supplied water from a nearby cottage, mulch hay, composted manure, and 6’ net fencing to keep out the deer that graze in adjacent fields.  The POS Community Garden Committee raised money for this work through donations, a tag sale on 27 May, and a small grant.

An end-of-season wrap-up meeting was held Sat. Sept. 30th to share thoughts about the first garden season; plan a harvest pot luck dinner, and discuss ideas for next year's community gardens.
